Atascosa County Real Estate 

The County Seat of Atascosa County Texas is Jourdanton. Jourdanton’s’ location is where 3 intersecting highways meet.  Highway 173, 97, and 16 are the intersecting primary roads.  The town is about 5 miles southwest of Pleasanton.  It was founded in 1909 when the shipping of livestock and cotton from the area needed a means for distribution.  The railroad was the answer.   The citizens of the new town helped to bring the Railroad system in, by raising fifty thousand dollars toward the cost of the Artesian Belt Railroad.

Oil was discovered here in 1942. This led to more growth for the town.  By 1960 a hospital, a new children’s wing,  a new school, had all been built in Jourdanton. The courthouse was remodeled as well.

Atascosa County has had 4 courthouses in its’ history.  The first courthouse in 1856 was a log cabin. A replica stands in its’ place in Navatosco Amphion. The only thing left of the original Amphion is the Cemetery, and a historical marker now to commemorate the beginnings. Trip Advisor online shows the replica cabin and the Historical Committee Plaque. There was also one Judge whom should receive notoriety.  Judge Paul Desmuke born on the 25th day of April in the year 1876.  He was born in the Amphion community. Not only was he considered competent and good at his job as a Judge.  He went on from this position to become an unusual knife thrower within a circus, then in a wild west show, and eventually, he was in Ripleys Believe it or Not, Odditorium, from 1933 through 1934.  This wasn’t all this man achieved. In 1926 and 1927 he was in 2 movies,  The Sideshow, and The Unknown.  After all of his travels and accomplishments, he did return to Atascosa County. His final resting place is in the Jourdanton City Cemetary.  Are you wondering, what was so unusual about his knife throwing act?  He was born with no arms.

Hanging on the walls of the Pleasanton, Texas Longhorn Museum is an oil painting of the 1885 Atascosa County courthouse. The moving of the courthouse from Pleasanton to Jourdanton involved those of the past who believed the records of the courthouse were stolen.  Another legend speaks like an old west bar tale. Angry residents over the decision to move the courthouse and one new gentleman who made a sarcastic comment. Pistols were drawn and aimed at him quickly!   It did require some quick apologies on his part to convince them to holster their guns.

The County of Atascosa is a county of large amounts of urban lands.  These lands are mainly farm and ranchlands.  There are commercial lands, hunting lands, and recreational lands as well here.  One recent statistic shows in Atascosa County the value of the combined lands for sale is over 142 million dollars.  Of this 142 million figure, there are approximately just over 34 thousand acres for sale! Land here is lower priced than in any other places in the state of TX.  Currently, the most land for sale is in the Pleasanton area.
