Medina County Real Estate 

Medina County, TX is located in the Southwesterly areas of Texas.  The landscape here is considered diverse. Elevations in Median can be as high as 1995 feet, in the north county areas known as Hill Country,  While the southern sections of the county have elevations of under 700 feet.  The Balcones Escarpment is the divider within Medina County.  The escarpment also acts as the separator of Hill Country from the Edwards Plateau area.  Depending on the area of the county you are in, there are gently rolling hills, with scenic views, and valleys of fertile soils and abundant greenery.  Cattle ranching has done well in the county, and farms have also thrived. Medina County has a growing season of approximately 263 days.  Within the scenic Hill Country of the northern part of the county,  live oaks, shinnery oaks, junipers, mesquite, and grasses grow well. The soils here are a mix of limestone, with black pliant soils. The southern areas of the county include Pecan trees and Cyprus, which can usually be found all along waterways and creek beds.  Soils here mainly clay and sandy rich.  This combination makes the soils great for the growth of  Arizona Cottontop, Buffalo, or Bluestem grasses.  Almost half the land of the county is considered top-quality for farming purposes.

Water Supplies-Rivers, Aquifers

Within the county of Medina is the Medina Lake Reservoir.  The reservoirs’ northeast section was completed in 1913.  It supplies water for an irrigation system throughout the eastern section of the county. The water source is the Medina River.  There are also underground water belts, the two main are the Carrizo Sand Aquifer, and the Edwards Aquifer.  There are other built-surface reservoirs here as well. They have been built on the Parkers, Squirrel, Elm, Chacon, and Live Oak creeks.  Ranchers within the county have water stock and storage tanks.

Fishing and Hunting

Medina County has no shortage of fishing or hunting.  Medina Lake is known for its’ black bass, walleyes, white bass, catfish, and bluegills. The lake is located in the northeast section of the county.  Hunting is also popular. Some of the game of the county include white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, axis deer, mouflon sheep, sika deer and the Javelina.  The javelina is quite interesting. It weighs in at about 50 lbs, with an approximate length of 3 ft. It resembles a small wild boar but is believed to be related to the South American Tapir.  Most hunting in the county is done through prior arrangements and leases with owners of privately owned lands.

  1. Medina Dam – 4th largest dam in the US. It was finished in 1913. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places
  2. Medina Lake– Known for its fishing, boating, swimming, kayak, canoe
  3. Love Creek Orchard & Store– Apple orchard, open to the public 
  4. Medina County Museum– the frontier beginnings through to the WWII time period. Includes railroad depot, caboose, and one room school house exhibits.Median River– kayak, canoe, swim
